Ape Out has some extremely light stealth mechanics to it. You can circle around the game's obstacles to get a leg up on the enemies, but most of the time you're just running full-steam ahead, smashing everyone and everything in your way. Oddly enough, what Ape Out ended up being is extremely far removed from how the project started.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, developer Gabe Cuzzillo reveals that he originally set out to make a stealth game about time travel where players replay levels again and again, and then see recordings of all their attempts. Cuzzillo started to move away from this idea due to his limited experience with coding games, which is what eventually pushed him towards what Ape Out would be.

'The goal of the experiment was to try and create a top-down game that had a sense of physicality to it and the original version of that was a stealth game where you were going to be on walls all the time, so you'd press yourself up against walls, slink along walls, push off walls, grab walls, peek around corners.. Then it was weird if you were running around grabbing guards and throwing them into walls [disabling or killing them] when you were just a normal bald man, so I thought it might be a good fit for a gorilla escaping captivity.'
