Earlier today i got a popup from steam asking me to restart my client as there was an update that should be applied.i had just closed Spiral knights before getting it and now i cannot log in. I get the following error message:'We experienced a problem authenticating with Steam.

Please ensure that the Steam client is running and that you are not logged in elsewhere.' I had just be running the game fine before the update and now i cant? I'm definitely not logged in elsewheredoes this happen every time steam updates? And should i try to hold off on updating steam as long as possible to have continued access to SK?

I'm experiencing the same issue. I only use Steam on one computer, and I was just playing Spiral Knights hardcore this weekend during the 5 energy deal. Is there a fix for those of us whom the update screwed over? It isn't just a 'Steam issue' as the game devs are utilizing Steam for distribution, which means if there is a problem and we clearly state it here, then they need to get on the phone and get Steam to fix the distribution of their game.

I'd really like to get back to work on my gear.:3. @Amarothia: The steam client handles authentication, and its not the distribution copy steam uses since its just a snapshot of the game client back from august.I've tried everything I could think of to break the SK client, even cycling through the different JREs, and I can't reproduce the issue. Seems like the only common factor so far is the affected users were prompted by Steam to restart for the patch. I manually checked for patch, and its working perfectly fine, but steam was acting really weird during the update process. When it closed it, it looked like it got stuck. So I watched the process for awhile and it closed itself out after about 30 seconds but I never saw the update bar. I noticed the inability to authenticate problem 11 hours ago and have tried some of the suggestions which have involved forcing steam to reupdate itself.

None have worked. The problem still persist for me, as of now.To be honest, the game was working fine 24 hours ago (after an update had applied and all).

The only thing that I did differently recently was that I had logged onto my profile at the steam website at another computer (16 hrs ago?). I had to verify and authenticate this other computer. I also used that (other) computer to check out my spiral knights inventory (because I had never explicitly done so from the website and was curious). Perhaps doing so somehow made a connection between that computer the SK server. I didn't log out of the steam website on that computer yet so perhaps that connection is somehow active.Anyway, this likely isn't the cause of the inability to authenticate but I thought I'd throw out my two cents. Hope this gets fixed soon. You're still not entitled for compensation for something that's free, that Three Rings does not have a contractual obligation to make available to you 100% of the time. That's part and parcel with any free game or service, like Facebook or Google.I digress. This thread isn't really the place to talk compensation.Has ANYONE received a response to their support ticket?Was ANYONE logged in at the time Steam updated?

EDIT: Mkay, this doesn't seem to be a factor.At first glance, the problem seems to be account specific, but we don't know what the common circumstances are that cause the bug. Even people who had it and fixed it can't reproduce it.
